About Zanzibar

The archipelago Zanzibar consists of the main island Zanzibar (Swahili: Unguja, pronounced Ungudscha) and the smaller island Pemba in the north. It is situated off the East African coast, south the equator in the Indian Ocean, about 40° eastern longitude and 12° southern latitude and belongs to Tanzania. The capital and economic centre is Zanzibar city with its historical old town Stone Town (Unesco world heritage site). Zanzibar is about 86 km long and 39 km wide.
